Ugly But Delicious – Not-So-Pretty Vegan Recipes

This is a quickie post to serve as a reminder that not all food is photo-worthy but that doesn’t mean it’s not incredibly delicious. Vegan food blogging is more of a passion project for me. Do I hope to earn some money doing it? Absolutely. But as a full-time writer and author, I don’t have time right now to focus on things like learning to do better food photos which means that some of my recipes get the short end of the stick.

But they are good. Some examples of this include soups and my vegan junk food or vegan comfort food meals. I think it’s important to know that not every meal is ready for The Gram, but they are all delicious and yeah, not always nutritious either.

Maybe one day when my books allow me to focus on fewer clients and more of my own stories I’ll take one of those master class tutorials on food photography, but until then here are a few not-so-pretty vegan dishes I’ve created recently-ish.

This roasted vegan tray back recipe is a good example. The vegetables came out a little too charred for photos but they didn’t have a burned taste and it was all pretty delicious, despite how it photographs.

What the heck is this, you ask? Vegan chili cheese fries…of course. I mean can’t you see that one little potato in the photos along with a few black beans and vegan mince under the cheesy vegan sauce?

I know, I know, I really need to step up my photo game and I will. Eventually. Still…it was an incredibly tasty vegan comfort food meal.

You all know how much I love a good vegan noodle recipe, and double that if it’s a vegan noodle salad recipe. If I love’em so much, then why aren’t there thousands of recipes on this blog you ask? Well because I suck at capturing them in their best light, part of that is because I still have to eat it, don’t I? 😛

This particular vegan noodle salad has crumbled Beyond Burger, ramen noodles, and tons of fresh veggies with a soy sauce & lemon juice dressing. It was incredible even though it kind of looks like a big ol’ mess!

Ah, this is one dish I absolutely fell in love with when I lived in Germany. Doner kebab wraps which some of you might call shawarma. It’s layered with fresh lettuce & cabbage, pickled onion, topped with crispy TVP and a spicy sauce all over. But when it’s wrap it just looks like a tortilla log so I rarely post these recipes. But here ya go!

Another vegan favorite in my household? Vegan mac and cheese. We don’t eat it often but more than I show here because well, look at it. Pasta doesn’t photograph great if you don’t know what you’re doing. To me, it looks good. Really good. But then I take the photos from a variety of angles and I frown. Nope. No bueno. Moving on.

These are just a few (more) examples of other vegan recipes I create but you don’t get to see, unless of course you follow me on Instagram where I sometimes risk public ridicule and show them off!

I’m not a great food photographer either. I’ll make a vegan dish that looks so beautiful, but when I take a picture, it just doesn’t translate.
Years ago I put a few food photos on Facebook and a friend said, “This is something new, did you just start cooking?” Uh, no, I’ve cooked for decades, I just don’t take that many pictures of my food. 🙂

Hahaha! I get one or two good photos each time and usually they are very close up so it looks really good. Then again, most of my friends aren’t vegan so they always ask “where’s the rest” because they’re convinced vegan means I don’t eat enough
