Amazing Heirloom Tomatoes!!

Happy Friday, fellow foodies!

I hope this week has been good to you and if not, well I hope you’ve been good to yourself.

So this week something great happened. Really great. There’s a new little market that popped up and they had…heirloom tomatoes!!! That’s right, those delicious, misshapen, vibrantly colored tomatoes that don’t come around often, at least not here in Romania, so I did what any proper foodie would…I bought some.

This girl had no clue the gem she was about to find!!!

At a cost, because the other reason you don’t see them often is because they are not budget-friendly. These bad boys were LEU48.00 per kilogram which is approximately $11.00, so not crazy but a lot for tomatoes. So I only got three tomatoes but they were just shy of a kilogram.

Were they worth it? ABSOLUTELY.

They were juicy and so flavorful that I was tempted to eat them the way my dad did, with nothing but salt & black pepper. But I didn’t…maybe next time.

I used 2 of the tomatoes for a quick and easy Caprese-style salad with fresh basil, vegan feta cheese and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. It was simple and easy and totally perfect.

The last tomato went into another salad with the works, and you know what? It still stood out like the beautiful rockstar it is.

I’m probably going to go back and get more because how can I not? They were too good and they’re only around for such a limited time, kind of like Oasis tickets.

What’s your favorite way to eat tomatoes?

The best is when you pick them in your own garden and they are still warm from the sun!

There are those who just don’t get the purpose of growing your own, these are my top choice and I never buy store bought. Just canned sauce if I run out.

I wish I could grow my own tomatoes, luckily there are a lot of fresh air markets here!

We do have farmer’s markets but you can grow them in a hay bale or a 5 gal plastic bucket with holes in the bottom as well.
