Happy Friday, folks! We’re back for more vegan travels and vegan nibbles.
I left off with our ride along the Danube River, which was fantastic. The day was nice, the weather was perfect and I had a blast learning the history of this part of the river. In some ways, it was similar to the history of the waterways in New Orleans in that some parts were created and widened to accommodate trade and easier travel.
There was even a small island that used to sit on the river between Romania & Serbia with a very large Muslim population that was decimated to allow big boats/ships easier passage. But you’re not here for a history lesson, but if you are feel free to ask questions because I will totally share more with you!

So after we left the cruise along the Danube River we left Orsova and headed to Drobeta Turnu-Severin for the next part of our trip. Decebalus was on the top of my list for this trip, but number two was this little gem along the River.
Why?
It wasn’t the vegan food, although there were some nice treats in that arena too.

It was two main things. First was Severin’s Fortress (Cetatea Medievală a Severinului in Romanian), which has a really cool history. The tower (pictured below) had been known about for some time but by accident they were digging again and what did the find? THIS WHOLE DAMN FORTRESS!!! Amazing! There torture devices, a well, and a nice look at history during this time when the Ottoman Empire had a large influence on the area.

The second thing was the Roman Castrum, which–you guessed it–was found by accident. They were laying ground for The Iron Gates Museum when parts of this was unearthed, which halted construction and this whole military encampment from the 13th Century along with a ruined church that has been both Orthodox and Catholic over the years.
It was A LOT of history and it was so incredibly fun and educational.

Okay, enough history…maybe. No promises.
Onto the vegan food!
There used to be a vegan restaurant in Drobeta Turnu-Severin called Vegan City but it was “temporarily closed” for undisclosed reasons and that severely narrowed down our options for vegan food.
Agape was right beside the Fortress and it was the only non-vegan restaurant that had genuine vegan food options beyond side dishes and French fries so…Agape it was.

They had vegan pizza but it was good vegan pizza, not the kind where they just throw a bunch of vegetables on top and call it good. The dough was nice and chewy, similar to the pizza I enjoyed last summer in Rome. They had a celery root burger with caramelized onions and barbecue sauce which was delicious and a celery root schnitzel with a red wine mushroom sauce (made with gorgonzola but they left it off to keep it vegan).

They made excellent cocktails and mocktails, and we even had a delicious edamame starter. Alas, much to my husband’s chagrin, there were no vegan options on the dessert menu. Everything contained “lapte” which is milk in Romanian. Still, the food was well made, seasoned well and very good.

The Hubs and I usually split most dishes unless it has something one of us doesn’t like (avocado & beets for me) so we tasted everything.
Oh…I almost forgot about the coffee shop, Acas, in Timisoara with the delicious vegan cherry crumble! The espresso was amazing as well. They offered two different types of beans, one with chocolatey undertones and the other with fruity ones. Chocolate was my favorite but the Hubs tried fruity and it was surprisingly fruity but also coffee-y? Anyway it was yum and the crumble was to die for, seriously it was so good that I would’ve throat punched someone for it, which is why I’m glad it’s nowhere near us!

OneTwo Taproom
And finally, booze. Okay, not booze but beer. Remember that beer I told you I had to start this trip in Sibiu? Well we went to their taproom in Timisoara and it was delicious! We tried a few different beers because it was a taproom and we were on vacation!

Phew, that about wraps up my vegan eats last week! I’m sure I’ll throw a few more photos in here or there, but if you want more you can find me on TikTok or IG, and even Facebook. Click the icons below to find me!
