Vegan Food Review ~ Vemondo Bougatsa (Lidl)

Happy Hump Day, Food Lovers!

Things have been pretty busy with me right now…okay always pretty busy. You know how it is. Anyway I was in need of a post for today and I figured I’d drop in something I haven’t done in a while, a vegan food product review.

Recently I was wandering the aisles of Lidl, as I often do, and I came across a new product from the vegan food company, Vemondo.

The package just said Bougatsa, which if I’m being honest, I had never heard of before. Thankfully I hit up the market early in the day so there’s not a lot of people–minus those over the age of 70 anyway–and I stepped to the side and pulled up the old Google machine to find out what it was.

Bougatsa is a dish of Greek origin that can be eaten for breakfast, mid-day or daytime snack. Oh and it can be either sweet or savory.

Do you see why I was still flummoxed by what the hell it was?

Did that stop me?

Obviously not.

Sometimes in life you just have to be surprised and this was one of those times.

As you can see the package lacked crucial information such as, is the plant based filling sweet or savory? Nada, or as they say in Romanian, nimic.

I read the instructions and opened it up. It was easy to cook; just pop it into a pre-heated oven and follow the instructions.

This was the uncooked version and as you can see it was pretty pale and kind of squishy, but still no hint of what it was.

I cooked it about 5 minutes more than the box indicated just to get it this golden brown. I’m sure the inside was done 5 minutes ago, but there’s something icky about eating a pale pastry…ya know?

How Was It?

This bougatsa was…forgettable. It wasn’t terrible, which is good news. But it also wasn’t very good. Oh, but it was savory! The plant-based filling needed some seasoning, if for no other reason than to bring out the flavor of what was inside the pastry.

the phyllo dough was flaky and nice but it also made this dish kind of messy to eat, which I don’t mind but my Hubs did. A little.

Would I Get It Again?

Nope. There’s no way to season it before placing it in the oven which means you have to add it as you eat or just drown it in hot sauce, which I’m not above doing. But it also wasn’t all that calorie friendly at 273 calories per 100 grams and the entire package is 400 grams and this was definitely not worth 546 calories.

On the upside, I now know what Bougatsa is and if I desire I can make it myself.

Will I? Probably not.

Have you had any good vegan food products lately?

Whatcha think?
