New Vegan Food Product ~ Unfished Vegan White Fish Fillet

When it comes to vegan food products, I am always on the look out for something new. And when I say new I mean something that is new to the market or simply new to me. So when I walked through the aisles of Carre Four and I found these vegan white fish fillets, I knew that I had to try them.

Before we go any further I have to tell you that I am NOT a vegan who needs for my vegan alternatives to taste exactly like the dead animals they’re replacing. In fact, I’d prefer they not to because if we’re all being honest with ourselves, there were things about that we all found unpalatable. So personally, I prefer the alternatives to have an ‘essence’ of the old while being something totally new and delicious.

I had…hopes, we’ll say, about how I thought these Unfished vegan fish fillets would taste. High hopes.

Such high hopes that I paired it with one of my favorite comfort meals from my grandmothers on both sides of the family. Fish and mac & cheese.

I won’t get too much into the recipe but you can go here for a super delicious vegan mac & cheese recipe.

About Unfished:

I am familiar with the Unfished brand thanks to their incredibly delicious canned vegan tuna products so when I saw they had even more vegan fish products on the market, I figured I had to try it.

For you guys. Because I love you.

This particular vegan fish alternative is pretty calorie friendly at 143 per 100 grams and 2 pieces are 170 grams total. It’s made with rice and pea protein, not tofu so it’s friendly for of you who have allergies or who want to avoid soy. So it’s pretty good if that’s your goal.

Cooking:

You can cook this vegan white fish fillet on the stovetop with a little bit of oil, in the oven or even in the microwave. I cooked it in the oven and the texture was really great. It was thick and flaky like a good cod or trout, and the seasoning came out wonderfully.

Taste:

My biggest problem with this vegan food find was…taste. Okay and smell. It tasted so fishy that it’s all I could focus on, honestly. It was TOO fishy, like bad fish that turned me off fish even before I adopted a vegan lifestyle. It was pretty…not great.

Taste was my biggest problem with this Unfished brand of white fish. The scent was overwhelming like days old fish and it was really off putting, even with hot sauce and fresh lemon juice.

Verdict:

If you miss eating fish this is a good proximity for white fish, of pretty much any kind. If you can ignore the smell then you will LOVE this vegan food product, I can promise you that.
